What Is Facebook Tagging and How Does it Work?

Facebook tagging is a feature that connects people to specific content like posts, photos and comments.

It works by attaching a user’s profile to the content through a clickable link. This can serve various purposes, from identifying individuals in photos to drawing their attention to relevant posts.

Let’s say you post a photo of a delicious homemade dinner you prepared. In the caption or comments, you tag your friend Jane, who loves cooking, with a comment like:

“Made this amazing dinner tonight! @Jane, you’d appreciate the recipe!”

In this example:

  • “Made this amazing dinner tonight!” is your caption.
  • “@Jane” is the tag, notifying Jane that you’ve mentioned her in your post.
  • “You’d appreciate the recipe!” is additional text in your post.

Here’s how it works:

  • When you tag someone, the post may appear on their timeline as a photo or status update.
  • The person you tag receives a notification about the tag.
  • The tagged post might also be visible to the tagged person’s friends.
  • You have control over what appears on your timeline through features like Timeline Review, where you can manage tags from both friends and non-friends, allowing you to filter and control the content associated with your profile.

Things To Keep In Mind

When using tags on Facebook, it’s essential to be aware of certain limitations and settings. Here are key points to keep in mind:

  • You can only tag up to 50 people or pages in a photo.
  • Sometimes, the option to tag people in photos posted by others may not be available due to their audience settings.

Audience Settings

  • When you tag someone in a photo/post, their friends can view, like and comment on it as well.
  • When you mention a person, page or group, a link is created with visibility based on their privacy settings. For instance, mentioning a secret group limits visibility to its members.

Next Steps

Tagging someone on Facebook is popular — however, be sure to keep social media etiquette in mind when engaging.

Despite the Timeline Review feature, not everyone appreciates getting tagged in a public photo or post without a heads up. We strongly suggest checking in with someone before tagging them. If they’re good with it, tag away!

I’ve tagged people in Facebook, and my posts say I’m with “5 others” but when you click on the “5 others” you cannot see the names of the people I’ve tagged. Even I cannot see the names and I’m the one who tagged them ! I am unable to see the other names on anyone’s posts, not just my own.
